"Newly released
data establish a strong link between obesity
and diabetes, asthma, hypertension,
and other chronic conditions that can become
life-threatening. On Jan 21, the
Agency for Healthcare
Research and Quality released the data,
based on the
Medical Expenditure Panel Survey. The
data
show that about 12.4 million American adults
were told they had diabetes in 2001. In
addition, in
2001, adults with diabetes were more than three
times more likely to be extremely obese than
adults without diabetes and were more than 1.5
times more likely to be obese. Adults with
diabetes
were about 1.5 times more likely than adults
without diabetes to have asthma, nearly three
times
more likely to have hypertension, more than
three times more likely to have heart disease
and
more than four times more likely to have a
stroke." From the
AAFP.
"A
new study on obesity-attributable medical
expenditures put the cost of those expenditures
at $75
billion in 2003, says the CDC. "This
report is alarming given that obesity has been
shown to
promote many chronic diseases, including Type 2
Diabetes, cardiovascular disease, several types
of
cancer and gallbladder disease.' said CDC
Director Julie Gerberding, M.D. According
to the study,
state-level expenditures in 2003 ranged from $87
million in Wyoming to $7.7 billion in
California. To
review an abstract of the findings, published in
"State-Level
Estimates of Annual Medical
Expenditures Attributable to Obesity" in the
January 2004 issue of Obesity Research"

Smoking Cessation
The Health Consequences of Smoking: A Report of the Surgeon
General (May 27, 2004):
Counseling patients
to quit smoking? Now
you have a wealth of
online support. A
new, animated Web
site uses lay terms
to describe the
findings in "The
Health Consequences
of Smoking,"
released May 27 by
the U.S. surgeon
general. The
960-page report
conclusively links
smoking with
leukemia; cataracts;
pneumonia; and
cancers of the
cervix, kidney,
pancreas and
stomach. Smoking,
the report says,
causes disease in
nearly every organ
of the body. "The
toxins from
cigarette smoke go
everywhere the blood
flows," said U.S.
Surgeon General
Richard Carmona,
M.D. A comprehensive
Web site on the
report is at
http://www.surgeongeneral.gov/library/smokingconsequences/
. Click on
"Chapters" for the
full report. Click

Consequences of
Smoking on The Body"

Breastfeeding

paper on the importance of breastfeeding:

From the AAFP, June 8, 2004:
The
FDA is warning women
against using
domperidone to
increase their
supply of breast
milk. The FDA has
not approved the
drug for any use but
has received
information that
some women are
purchasing the drug
from compounding
pharmacies and
sources in foreign
countries to
increase milk
production.
According to the
agency's June 7
press release at
http://www.fda.gov/bbs/topics/answers/2004/ans01292.html
, "There have been
several published
reports and case
studies of cardiac
arrhythmias, cardiac
arrest and sudden
death in patients
receiving an
intravenous form of
domperidone that has
been withdrawn from
marketing in a
number of
countries." The oral
form of domperidone
still marketed in
some countries to
treat gastric
disorders has
product labeling
warning
breastfeeding women
not to use the drug.
The FDA has alerted
its field personnel
to be on the lookout
for attempts to !
import the drug and
has sent warning
letters to
pharmacies that
compound products
containing
domperidone and
firms that supply
domperidone for use
in compounding.
